Its been a hard day’s night and I’ve been working like a dog!
I think that would probably be the world’s best known simile! Or how about this one – ‘Cause she looks like a flower but she stings like a bee/Like every girl in history’ or this – ‘ My heart is like an open highway’!
I love similes and I think they make mundane sentences sound wonderfully alive, fun and at times quirky when spoken figuratively! Similes are expressions that are used to draw comparisons and can be an effective way to engage readers when used correctly and in moderation. They are usually preceded with ‘as’ , ‘like’ , ‘ as if ‘ or ‘to’.
Here are some examples to jog your memory ( ah now that is a metaphor not a simile)
- as gentle as a lamb
- sweet as a rose
- smokes like a chimney
- as clear as day
- to soar like an eagle
Found this blog dedicated to funny similes , here are ones which caught my attention
- As useful as a fart in a hurricane
- As useful as a G rated porno film
- As useful as a hand knitted condom
Lol ! I wish I was creative enough to come up with similes such as these! If you’ve heard some hilarious ones, do share.
And I hope this has been a useful reminder on the joy of similes!
